Microchipping your pet
Micro-chipping is the most effective form of permanent identification
that allows lots pets to be reunited with their owners. Although
not yet a legal requirement in WA we recommend that all pets
have a microchip implanted.
A
microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, which is
injected under your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades.
Each microchip has a unique code which is recorded along
with your details and your pet’s details. This code and information
is placed onto a national computer database that is available
24 hours a day. You will receive a certificate showing all
of the recorded details.
How it works?
A
microchip scanner is passed over the your pet to reveal the
unique code. We then check this code in the national data
bases to obtain your contact details.
The microchip scanners are in routine use by Council’s,
veterinarians and animal welfare organisations such as the
RSPCA and Dogs Refuge Home and also interstate vets and welfare
groups. The chips used are of international standards so
can be read overseas.
Why should your pet be microchipped?
Pets go missing every day either due to getting off their
leads, doors/gates being left open or are even stolen. At
times are injured during their escapes so there is even greater
urgency to find the owner.
Micro-chipping makes it easy for a loved pet to be reunited
with its owner, ensuring a greater probability of finding
the owner immediately.
When
to have a pet microchipped?
We can implant a chip at any time. We will routinely ask
if you want your pet to be chipped when under sedation or
an anaesthetic but it can easily be done with the pet awake.
A pet can be chipped at any age.
What does it cost?
The cost of the microchip includes implantation, the chip
and life-long registration. All you need to do is keep any
phone numbers and addresses up to date throughout your pet’s
life.
